Diagnosis of meniscal injury of the knee

Abstract
When a torn meniscus is suspected by clinical test, it should be confirmed by arthrography and arthroscopy. Therapeutic arthrotomy reveals the extent and nature of actual pathology and accordingly discloses the overall accuracy of preoperative diagnoses. For the two-year period up to November of 1983, the authors could operate 33 cases of meniscal injuries in which the diagnosis was reached by clinical test, arthrography, and arthroscopy. Diagnostic value of each method was compared in this study.
1. All 33 cases was comprised of 27 men and six women and 27 of them were in their third decade.
2. The site of lesion was medial meniscus in seven and lateral in 27, the latter incidence being more than three times.
3. Diagnostic accuracy was 76 % of clinical test, 73 % of arthrography, and 90 of arthroscopy.
4. Lateral discoid cartilage was ten, and the bucket-handle tear was seven.
